SACRIFICIAL GIVING TO GOD

Luke 21:1- And He ( Jesus ) looked up, and saw the RICH MEN casting their gifts ( offering ) into the treasury.

2 And He saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites ( 2 small coins, all she had to live on ).

3 And He said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in MORE than they all.

When we give, God looks at how we’re giving, whether grudgingly, happily, out of our surplus or sacrificially. It is written “God loves a cheerful giver”, in 2 Corinthians 9:7. So in all we do especially in our giving, it must be done with a pure intent and with a desire to please and serve God with what we have.

The rich men who gave their gifts gave out of their abundance, it wasn’t much of a sacrifice, but in this POOR WIDOW’S case, several red flags needs to be noticed. First of all, God’s laws to the Jews was clear cut on how the STRANGERS, WIDOWS and the FATHERLESS were to be treated, observe:

Psalms 146:9- The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

Isaiah 1:17- Learn to do well; seek judgment, RELIEVE the oppressed, judge the fatherless, PLEAD for the widow.

Job 22:9- Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

Deuteronomy 27:19- Cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen.

These are enough scriptures to condemn the religous leaders and the rich men who stood by without compassion and watched this poor widow put in all she had and returned back empty stomach and empty handed, but thank God the God she was offering to was sitting right there praising her to His disciples.

She did not let her poverty prevent her from giving to her God even if it was her last two copper coins.

For the poor widow to give all she had to live on, it was clear indication that God was her absolute top priority in life. Now what this is NOT teaching is, give your rent money, electric bill, car note or mortgage as an offering, no, that wouldn’t be wise at all, it would be sin on your part for purposely getting in debt and not taking care of your responsibilities.

So when you give, do you give cheerfully and is it self sacrificing because you love God and His people?

Fear God and repent, God bless…
